Introduction: Engaging Cinema

#1 After reading the introduction chapter to Engaging Cinema, what are your initial thoughts as to studying the subject of film?
I think that it will be very interesting. There are a lot of things involved with film that you may have noticed before, but never really taken time to think about it. For example, movies take you to places that may not even exist on this planet but you would they think they do because the experience is so real. Movies engulf you and make you believe whatever the are showing you.
Movies also give a sense of belonging. You could not be friends with someone or feel like you belong but if you both/all saw the same movie, you could all have a conversation about it which makes you feel like part of the group. People can also adopt fashions from movies and that can contribute to a sense of belonging if you are all dressing the same.

#2 Are movies a social danger or social benefit?
Movies are a social benefit but also a social danger to me.
They make you be apart of something more. They give you a sense of belonging to something. They also create many job openings for people because there are more jobs then just the director and the actor. Movies are also a great source of entertainment. There are many people who go just because they are simply board.
They can also be dangerous though because people can get addicted to them. If your binge watching movies or episodes of things, that is not healthy. Movies also are very expensive to produce. My last danger is that movies portray violence and they do not abide by the law. When people see that happening they may think that it is alright and they may try it in real life.

  1. I agree with you on the subject of making jobs for people anyone who has taken the time to read the list of names in the credits a lot of work goes into making a good movie much less the block buster that every director dreams of

  2. I definitely agree with how you said movies engulf you to make you believe whatever they tell you. When I was little I took movies as the only resource there was. That has now changed and find myself looking something up after a movie just to see if it is true. As to what you said about it being both a social danger and social benefit, I agree 100%!

  3. I agree how you say movies can take you to places that dont exist in real life, because when you are watching a movie you think it is so real and you feel like you are actually there in real life. Also i agree that movies can be both a social benefit and a social danger, just depending on what they are showing in the movie.

  4. I agree with the statements talking about movies bringing the viewer to a whole new world. It can be pretty magical in that sense. I don't agree the movies themselves are the social dangers, but perhaps the people watching them are the dangers.
